THIS IS #MyGoogleZa story
I have many Google stories, but today I will tell you about how Google contributed to one of my biggest career and lifestyle decisions.
THE BIG CAREER DECISION
4 years ago, I was about to land a really great job with a really great company. Before I signed on the dotted line though I wanted to meet the team I was going to work with and get a feel for the organisations culture etc. So off I went to Cape Town to do just that. This was an in and our trip, flying in the morning and fly out that evening, so time was of the essence. I was super prepared it was important to me that this be the right decision as it was going to mean big changes for me and my family.
Anyway, I land in Cape Town; it’s a rainy and rather miserable day, I rush to the car rental get into the car, turn my phone and no signal… as in all 3g seemed to have left planet earth. You see I was confident of getting anywhere because of Google maps.
Now I don’t know what to do by I am figuring I can follow some street directional signs I should make it. I get on the road see signs that say Bellville which is where I am going and drive slowly in the pouring windy rain trying to read the signage. Now I am a nervous wreck, I miss my first turn off which I found out later was the easiest quickest way of getting to Bellville and continue on the N2 towards town. I realize I am getting lost, but I am not confident enough to take the next off-ramp and just turn around, I keep checking my phone but nothing.
Finally, I stop on the side of the freeway, and call the company and ask for directions. The poor lady on the other side start the conversation by saying I must go east (East of what I wonder, who exactly knows where east is) after a long string of instructions I don’t understand I put the phone down start the car again and carry on in the hope of seeing an off-ramp with a petrol station. All I can see now is that I am going still going towards Cape Town city center, I stop once again on the side of the road. I try and calm down and decide to turn my phone on to flight mode and then to call mode again. I go back into Google Maps, the little cursor flicks, and then a moment of clarity as it shows me exactly where I am on the N2. I am sure someone winning a million bucks hasn’t been as happy as I was, I hate getting lost.
I keyed in the address and that twangy American voice came on and said “Go east” I rolled my eyes and she said then corrected herself and said: “In 800 meters take the exit on the left” …and we were back in business. I arrived at the meeting place one hour late but very relieved.
It wasn’t the best start to the day but thanks to Google’s Maps, that day I got to meet an amazing bunch of people, and through that my hubby and I made a decision that resulted in our family moving to one of our favorite places in the world where we spent two amazing years.
Ever since then Google Maps is my go-to point for any travel, and has never let me down, if only the 3g network could be as reliable my life would be amazing.
