Blogging Journey

Week 4 – Things I spend my money on

I cannot believe it is already the 4th week of this year and we are talking about spending (we all like a bit of spend, spend spend now and again).  Time flies when you are busy and I have been busy. The start of the school and getting ready, starting work and being organised for this year, busy with updates and rework on my blog, busy with the branding work I am doing… hopefully this all means it is going to be a good year, productive and fulfilling.  Let’s see how it goes!

Week 4 52 Week Blogger Challenge - Topic: The Things I spend my money on

For this week’s tasks, I had to re-examine my spending habits to see what I pay attention to.

Check out the lady who started the series by clicking on this image

What is interesting about this activity is that I was already in full swing with it in preparation for my 2016 monthly Blog Series “Life ReDesign”, one of the areas we will be paying attention to is our finances. Last year I had the pleasure of attending an event hosted by Liberty where the expert discussion focused on how women do not take care of their money and end up overly spending because of many reasons and do not save for their futures properly (READ HERE). It was very exciting for me to see these 2 projects that I am busy with this year dovetail on this topic.

The List

While going through my spending list (and redoing my budget) I realised there is a recurring theme of things I am always spending money on:

  1. Household Expenses (Car, Fuel etc.) – Being an adult is very expensive
  2. Nappies for TheMelo (we are still potty training)
  3. Monthly School Fees (TheHeir better be a professor after he finishes primary school – the cost of education is too high)
  4. TheHeir’s extra mural activities (So the cost of school fees is high but so is everything else that goes with it) I call these the school accessories
  5. Child Care expenses (TheMelo has a fulltime nanny – a great lady)
  6. Weekly Fresh Fruit and Veggies Shopping (The kids annihilate these on a weekly basis, so every week we have to replenish, I guess this is a good problem to have)
  7. Books and Stationery (I love reading, I am always buying books and I have a SLIGHT obsession with stationery – I buy a lot of it. I am working on this problem.
  8. Clothes, Clothes (For me and the boys). You see, I kinda like clothes, and shoes and bags – and I like my boys to look good, it is a problem
  9. Travel (I mostly travel for business – but I have noticed that when you are away from home the urge to shop is stronger)
  10. Self-Investment (My blog, TheDesignInc) – This is my future it is worth the investment
  11. Skin Care and Hair Products (Because I am Worth it)
  12. Entertainment (We love having people over, they eat, we feed them, and they do us when we visit them)
  13. Savings and Donations (My future and other people’s future)
  14. Our Home & Décor (I live there so…….)

Spending on my mind

This is not an exhaustive list, but I was interested  in how the items above say a lot of about what I am willing to invest my hard earned cash on – a nice way to focus my attention.  This was a useful exercise for me.I also noticed that the things I spend money on according to my budget, are also the things that feature strongly in my blog categories (is that a coincidence?).

Are you relooking at your finances, and spending habits?

I am looking forward to going on this journey with you. Let me know what you think.

I super needed this, we are making some HUGE budget changes and upgrading to a new home rental hopefully and I have a new job to consider. I am taking control of the budget in full at this point (hubby has been a little frivolous and has asked me to take the reigns to help us work towards a better plan). I am naturally better at organizing so I think he may be right lol, these will help me, help him focus on priorities!

I’m sure if I wrote down everything I spend money on, 90% of it would be beauty products lol.

I am trying to cut back on spending, for no other reason than I intend on stopping work at 55 (currently I am 36 and on a savings drive plus we want to move). Don’t get me wrong I like nice things just like everyone else. But instead of buying several handbags throughout the year I buy one designer bag in the sales. I am trying to put this ethos into all my spending habits. Other than the necessities of course – generally anything child orientated 🙂

Since going from two salaries down to just one, (plus gaining a person to clothe, feed and entertain) we’ve had to look carefully at our finances and to seriously tighten those purse strings. We’re learning to budget, buy in bulk, take advantage of special offers and to not buy things spontaneously . We have our hiccups but so far so good. #KCACOLS

It looks like everything you’re spending your money on is necessary or worthwhile, which must be a nice feeling. We are getting by on one income since baby came along, it really is time for me to find a job if we wish to spend money on anything besides necessities!

I should re-look at my finances but I think I am a bit reluctant too! I think there might a little too much spending on chocolate! It’s great to know that you are putting your money into areas which are most important to you and to keep track as well. Thanks for sharing with #abitofeverything

What a great exercise!! Since I stopped working and became a SAM I had to reduce my expenses dramatically. I couldn’t afford it anymore. I used to go shopping a lot. Even when I do the food shopping I’m a nightmare, that bad that my husband decided to do the food shopping himself as it was going to be cheaper!! LOL I think now I’m more used to and I don’t have the need to spend as much. Mostly the things I buy now could be seen also as an investment for my blog which is not bad. I think you are doing great with your expenses. Nothing looks that is not necessary or perhaps could be useful for your blog. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS, 🙂 x
